Phuket is a large island in the south of Thailand. It is located on the western coast of the country a little bit more than 500 miles south of Bangkok. The island is very large, roughly the size of Singapore, with a mountain range running down the center. The island is somewhat similar to what one sees in Hawaii, but much bigger. Regardless, it has long been famous as one of the more beautiful locations not only in Thailand, but the world.

It is almost impossible to describe the beauty of Phuket in mere words. The island coastline is a collection of little hidden bays and beaches that back up onto deep green foliage running up the mountains. You can find perfect white beaches that flow into crystal clear water that slowly transitions to a stunningly beautiful bright green and then deep blue as you get deeper into the water. If heaven has beaches, they look like these.

What is there to do in Phuket for visitors? Well, it goes without saying that living the beach life is foremost, but what does this mean exactly? You can relax on the beach day in and day out, but the fishing and diving are also to die for. The waters off Phuket even contain large tuna, one of the few areas in the world where you can find them relatively close to the shore. Taking relaxing, slow boat tours through some of the bays will expose you to rock formations that shoot straight up out of the water hundreds of feet in the air like cactuses in the middle of a water desert. For those who love rock climbing, Phuket has some of the best vertical wall climbing in Asia. There are outfitters who will provide you with all the necessary equipment and then transport you off to epic, hidden climbing spots right on the water.
It can be easy to spend your entire trip on the beach when on the island. In my opinion, this is a bit of a mistake. The interior of the island has much to see as well with deep green valleys winding through it. Instead of driving the interior, you should consider going on a horseback tour to get a glimpse of the more organic areas where nature rules. The beauty of the interior of the island is just as nice as the beach area, so spending a day in the saddle is definitely worth your valuable time.

Patong is the main point of reference on the island. It used to be a small beach town, but is now the main beach and resort area on the island. It sits on the western side of the island and looks out over the Andaman Sea. If you prefer shopping, restaurants and nightlife on your vacation, Patong is your destination on Phuket.
Patong sits on a long beach that is well over three miles long. The area is packed with resorts, restaurants, bars and shopping. The area is known for its very lively nightlife scene with the main concentration of the hubbub being found on Bangla Road. From there, you can fan out to other exotic and interesting nightlife destinations.
How does Phuket rank as a vacation destination compared to the rest of the world? Such lists are subjective, but Phuket has to be right there at the top. It is simply paradise.
