Running? Things You Should Know Before Introducing Running Into Your Fitness Programme

28
Ask people why they include running in their fitness programme and many will say it is because they believe running is a good way to lose weight.
How many of them would be doing as much running if they new the damage they were potentially causing themselves? People assume that by running they will become fitter and healthier.
While it is certainly true that running will help to improve a person's cardio vascular fitness (fitness of the heart & lungs), this will only be the case if they are able to keep running regularly enough without getting injured! Have you ever watched someone running on the treadmill? If so, you may have noticed how uncomfortable many people look when running.
This is not solely down to them either: A: finding running hard because they are unfit; or B: because they are tired.
often it will be because they have not spent enough time stabilising their body.
If you have not spent sufficient time making sure your body is strong from the inside out (particularly in what is called the lumbo-pelvic hip region aka your lower back pelvis and hips) you will greatly increase your chance of injury, not only while running but in every day life as well.
Take running as an example, a person will probably not injure themselves immediately they embark on a running programme.
The injury will only manifest itself some time later after repeated poor movement patterns have caused stress to the body resulting in injury (cartilage damage to the knees is a good example) .
The DoubleVision team strongly recommends you spend time following a progressive stabilisation programme before you start running - see our fitness video podcasts (coming soon) for examples of exercises which can help to strengthen your lumbo-pelvic hip region and lessen your chances of injury.
