How to Wire an Alternator to Produce Electric
- 1). Locate the terminals on the alternator. There is a positive and negative terminal clearly labeled. Some alternators have a third terminal. This one is used to connect a wire that goes to the alternator warning light. Loosen the terminals by using a screwdriver or wrench, depending on the type of connection.
- 2). Locate the positive red cable that connects to the alternator. The other end connects to the battery. Insert the exposed copper wire under the connector and tighten it.
- 3). Locate the negative black cable that connects to the alternator. The other end connects to a metal part of the engine, such as a bracket or large bolt. Insert the exposed copper wire under the connector and tighten it. If your alternator has a third terminal, find a yellow or blue wire. It is much thinner than the two alternator cables. It usually feeds into a wire loom. Insert the third wire under the connector and tighten it.
- 4). Turn on the engine. The alternator will produce electricity to charge your battery and power your electrical devices.
