How to Register an S Corp
- 1). Register the corporation's name in the state in which the business will operate. This includes identifying whether the business will have a doing-business-as alias.
- 2). Apply for an employer identification number with the Internal Revenue Service. You can apply online on the Internal Revenue Service's website, irs.gov.
- 3). Contact the IRS and apply as an S corporation. Complete the required tax forms, such as Form 2553, Election by a Small Business Corporation.
- 4). Register the business with the state revenue department. You may also need a sales tax permit or vendor's license, so check with your state government office (see the Business.gov link under Resources).
- 5). Get any necessary licenses and permits. The items required will depend on what type of corporation you operate. Contact your state and local government offices to find out what licenses and permits are needed (see the Business.gov link under Resources).
