What Goodwill Items Can Be Claimed on Your Taxes?
- Donated clothing must be in good, usable condition. It should be clean, with no holes, tears or stains. Clothing items that can be donated include pants, shirts, dresses, shoes, jackets, sleepwear and bathing suits. To assist in determining the donation value of used clothing, Goodwill has prepared a Donation Valuation Guide.
- Donated household items should be clean and in working order. Do not donate anything that has been recalled or banned. If you have a question about the safety of an item, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. Typical kitchenware that can be donated includes dishes, glassware, cookware, coffee pots, toaster ovens, toasters and electric fry pans. Other suitable household items include artwork, vases, flower pots, luggage and books.
- Check with your local Goodwill store to confirm that it takes computers. If it does, you can take any unwanted electronics, no matter the brand or condition, to your Goodwill store or drop-off center. There is no charge to recycle your electronics through Goodwill. If you are donating a computer, remove all personal data from the hard drive before making your donation.
- Donated vehicles are used by Goodwill in its programs or are sold. Before making your donation, take photographs of your vehicle and determine its fair market value by using an accepted guide such as Kelly Blue Book or Edmund's. If Goodwill uses the car in its programs, you may deduct the fair market value on your income tax. If Goodwill sells the vehicle, you may deduct only the amount Goodwill received from the sale of the car. Within 30 days of your donation, you will receive written acknowledgment if the vehicle will be used by Goodwill. If Goodwill sells the car, you will receive written notification of the price received.
