Math And Honesty - Is There A Correlation?

27
The other day, I was discussing with an acquaintance our mutual respect for honesty, integrity, ethics, and mathematics.
You'd be surprised how many mathematicians see the world in absolute terms, and not much gray area in between.
That's a hard way to live in a complex world and society like ours, consider how muddy the waters get as the system becomes more detailed with minutia.
Even those who study law, find themselves overwhelmed with possibilities and cause for alarm as situations become complex and fall between the cracks.
At one point a law student with the highest ethical integrity might say; I guess in the end it is all relative.
Yes, and that pragmatism is problematic when it comes to honesty and absolutes.
Luckily, math is purer and seems right with the sound ethical mind of absolute black and white, wrong and right, or the ones and zeros (on or off) of computer science and mathematics.
My acquaintance, who also loves math, perhaps even more than I, stated; "I believe in honesty and the golden rule.
I believe in the overall goodness of humans (even against many observations).
" Yes me too, unfortunately in considering all this I stated; okay, but I'd like to redefine "goodness" so I can concur.
Because the way in which many organizations, political parties, religions, leaders, etc.
define goodness, just, or ethical leaves me scratching my head some times.
Later he noted that he liked organization in his life, in his world as he put it, which is great because that is what physics is all about, and the universe is all about math, Einstein devoted his life to trying to figure it all out, the elegance of simple and complex math, a world of numbers, and he too, like the first year law student who'd come to the conclusion; "it's all relative!" was his answer, thus, the theory of relativity to help make the numbers work, preventing them from going astray.
Still, in my view math and numbers are honest, but only in a finite set.
When we take that to the next level we find "goodness" or math = honesty to fall down.
Organization, standardization, everyone on the same page, group goal attainment, all good - if for the right reasons, although once conflicts arise, what is good becomes gray, and what is gray should not be force-focused to prove a point or allow an organization to falter on the means and ends debate because the goal is attainable and since the mission is "good" the methods are acceptable.
Life? The life experience could be the best educational VR training simulation in the entire universe.
Well, I hope I was able to make you think today, didn't want to digress too much, just enough to wet your appetite for reflection and deeper thought.
Please consider all this and think on it.
