Future TV: Fall 2011
The five broadcast networks and some of the cable networks have announced their schedules for Fall 2011, and here's how the new and returning shows fall on the calendar. Our most DVR-centric night is going to be Fridays, with competing series on three broadcast networks plus Syfy. Other series will premiere after the new year, including the season premieres of both versions of Being Human.
Airs: Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW
Premieres: Thursday, September 15
The upcoming season 3 of The Vampire Diaries will develop the complex relationship between Elana and the two brothers while dealing with Stefan's new renegade persona. The season will also include Klaus and The Original Family as his motives for wanting Stefan on his side, the continued presence of Elijah (Daniel Gilles), and a guest appearance by Jack Coleman (Heroes) as an anti-vampire local.

Premieres: Thursday, September 15
The new series, like Vampire Diaries developed by Kevin Williamson for The CW from a book series by L. J. Smith, follows a California teenager who learns that she comes from a family of witches. Stars include Brittany Robertson and Thomas Dekker.

Premieres: Friday, September 23
This new series, created by Susannah Grant and co-executive produced by Jonathan Demme, features a self-involved surgeon whose encounters with the ghost of his dead wife cause him to reassess his life and attitudes, and to do more to help those in need. Stars include Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, and Julie Benz.

Season 4 of Fringe dives deeper into the mysteries opened up at the end of season 3, including the problem of Peter Bishop's "existence." More plans for season 4 include more interaction between Here and There (with both of Anna Torv's characters facing off), reveals on Olivia's abilities, and exploration of past events.
Airs: Fridays at 9 p.m. on The CW
Premieres: Friday, September 23
Season 7 of Supernatural will reestablish the Winchesters as outlaws on the run from a new and dark menace, with old faces (good and evil) joined by new friends and enemies. Castiel, though no longer a regular character, will still feature in a few episodes, but the emphasis will be on the brothers and their travels.
Airs: Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox
Premieres: Monday, September 26
This ambitious new series, created by Kelly Marcel and Craig Silverstein and co-executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, and Brannon Braga, has several expeditions of colonists fleeing the dying Earth of 2149 through a portal taking then 85 million years into the past, where deadly threats await them. Stars include Jason O'Mara, Stephen Lang, Shelley Conn, and Landon Liboiron.
Airs: Saturdays at 9 p.m. on BBC America
Premieres: Saturday, October 8
This six-episode UK series, which aired on the Sky Living channel in February and March to middling ratings, involves a block of flats haunted by the ghosts of former inmates of the Bedlam asylum. Jed Harper (Theo James) can see the ghosts even when they're not trying to manifest to ordinary mortals, which they do on occasion. Other tenants include Kate (Charlotte Salt), Ryan (Will Young), and Molly (Ashley Madekwe).
Airs: Fridays at 8 p.m. on NBC
Premieres: Friday, October 21
Chuck's fifth and final season offers the cast and crew a chance to bring Chuck Bartowski's story to a climax, as he faces the challenges of succeeding as a spy without the Intersect and of ensuring the happiness of his dream girl Sarah. Season 5 will consist of 13 episodes, but it's not clear whether NBC will air them all at once.

The new series is described as an Oregon-based cop drama with a twist: a dark and fantastical project about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm's Fairy Tales exist. The central character is a homicide detective who learns that he is a descendent of a group of hunters known as "Grimms", who fight to keep the balance of humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world. Stars include Russell Hornsby, David Giuntoli, and Bitsie Tulloch.
Airs: Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC
Premieres: Sunday, October 23
This new series, created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, is set in a picturesque Maine town that actually turns out to be a parallel world in which fairy tale characters look like normal people and don't remember their true identities or anything about their true lives. Stars include Jennifer Morrison, Jared Gilmore, Josh Dallas, Lana Parrilla, and Ginnifer Goodwin.
Airs: Fridays on Syfy
Premieres: October
Season 4, set at 13 episodes, will continue to explore the Hollow Earth story and may provide both a musical episode and a love interest for Magnus.
