Identification

• Promectin (ivermectin) is often used in cattle as a wormer. Veterinarians often prescribe it for dogs for parasites, worms, lice and mange mites.
  
  

Effects

• There have been some side effects with the use of Promectin in dogs. These can include wobbly gait, disorientation, vomiting and personality changes.
  
  

Serious Side Effects

• Collie dogs that have the MDRI gene mutation may be especially sensitive to Promectin. Collies can develop symptoms of ivermectin toxicity with a single dose of Promectin.This can cause illness and even death, and this medication should be used with caution in Collie dogs.
  
  

Function

• Promectin is considered safe for use in dogs when under the supervision of a veterinarian. Promectin works to rid the body of parasites, lice, worms and mites.
  
  

Considerations

• The use of Promectin is not recommended in Collie dogs, or any dogs that have the MDRI gene mutation. If your dog experiences any of the neurological side effects associated with Promectin, contact your veterinarian immediately.
