How to File a Motion to Seal Records
- 1). Contact the court where the records are located. You need to file your motion with this court. Inquire about any specific paperwork needed to file a motion to seal records, and ask if pre-made forms are available. Check the court's website or call before you visit in person becuase you may be able to access the forms online or have them sent to you.
- 2). Write out the reasons why you are requesting the court records be sealed. Follow the directions on the form or adhere to court rules specific to the jurisdiction you are in when presenting the information.
- 3). Add a sample order to your motion. This is the document that officially states that you want the court to seal the records, and it will be signed by a judge if your motion is granted.
- 4). Give a copy of your motion to the government prosecutor, and fill out a certificate of service. Include this certificate and any other necessary documents with your motion when you file it.
- 5). File the motion with the court once you complete all paperwork.
