How to Obtain a Lithuanian Passport

4

Applying for a Passport as a Resident

    • 1). Fill out the application and attach 3 identical, current photos of yourself. The photos must be head shots and be 40 x 60 millimeters in size. The images should also be in color.

    • 2). Attach a copy of your birth certificate and a copy of your Lithuanian photo identification. The state will only take a Lithuanian-issued ID. If you are not a citizen, but are living in the country, obtain a picture ID issued by the Lithuanian government and include a copy of it with your application.

    • 3). Provide a copy of any documentation that proves that you are a citizen of a foreign country other than Lithuania. If you are not a citizen, but are living in the country and have a certificate of retention, include a copy as well as a copy of your foreign passport. The certificate of retention is similar to a visa.

    • 4). Write a personal statement or essay explaining why you believe you are a Lithuanian citizen, and attach a copy to your application.

    • 5). Include a copy of your certificate of marriage to a citizen of Lithuania, if it applies.

    Applying for Citizenship Through Ancestry

    • 1). Complete all of the steps in Section 1, and include additional requirements in Section 2.

    • 2). Provide any birth and marriage certificates of family members who were residents of Lithuania before June 15, 1940. Also include birth certificates of descendants of those who resided in the country before June 15, 1940. For example, if your great-grandparents lived in Lithuania before this date, but your grandparents and parents did not, you will have to include birth certificates to help prove your lineage. All documentation before June 15, 1940, must be issued from the country of Lithuania. Any paperwork dated after June 15 can be issued from any other country.

    • 3). Provide other documentation such as military records, proof of employment, old photo identifications and old passports. Anything that can be used to prove residence can be used. No matter how insignificant the documentation may be to you, be sure to have copies. It can only help you obtain a Lithuanian passport and citizenship. But be sure that the documentation is dated before June 15, 1940, and was issued in Lithuania.

    • 4). Have the documents that are not Lithuanian-issued translated into Lithuanian, and notarized at the appropriate government office. In the United States, the documents must be authenticated at the U.S. Department of State Authentications Office. Only after this is completed can your documentation and application be submitted to the Lithuanian embassy for processing.
