Spanish Culture

22
The nation of Spain actually contains more than one distinct culture. They all, however, find their history mostly in Ancient Rome, but can trace other influences to pre-Roman Celts and the Iberians.

The Iberians were an culture first noted around the 6th century B.C. and refers for the most part of the people who lived in the southern and eastern regions of the Iberian Peninsula (known as modern Spain).

The Phoenicians also played an early influence in Spanish culture. The Phoenicians are considered among the Semitic peoples and were from the coastal areas of Lebanon and Syria. Phoenicians, incidentally, are mentioned several times in the Bible.

The Moors, medieval Arab people, who entered Spain in 711, had considerable influence of the formation of culture in Gibraltar, most of the Iberian Peninsula, and even Portugal.

The tribe known as the Visigoth also held a presence in Spain and created a Christian presence there.

Spanish as a language is descended from Latin used in the Middle Ages with some influences from ancient Iberians and Celts, plus some influence from the Gothic language that came before the Romans.

The Spanish language has become significant around the world. During the colonization of Mexico, Central and South America, Spanish was introduced. Although there are differences between Spanish spoken on the Iberian Peninsula and Spanish spoken in the Americas, a person who understands the language can do well in any Spanish-speaking country.

The minor differences in syntax, accent, and pronunciation will not be a hindrance to those proficient in either the Spanish of Spain or the Spanish of Latin America.

Spanish ranks #2 in spoken languages around the world. Only Chinese (Mandarin) is used more. Spanish has become not only the language of great novels and songs, but is also a widely used business and technological language.

Therefore, learning Spanish will situate one well for all sorts of uses: business (negocios), travel, dining out, politics, and understanding the variety of cultures the Spanish language represents.
