Guide Review - M-Edge New Yorker Jacket for Kindle
March 17, 2011 - Kindle covers, I believe, are a necessity. A good cover or case will not only protect your e-reader screen, it'll also make holding the device more comfortable for extended periods of time. With M-Edge's New Yorker Jacket, you can also add the benefit of encasing your Kindle in a truely pleasing piece of art.
The Kindle Jacket I received recently from M-Edge features Joseph Farris's 'Dogwood Tree in Bloom' design, but there are four other cover designs featuring legendary New Yorker artwork: Ana Juan's 'Page Turner', Bob Knox's 'Sunday in Central Park' (shown), Eric Drooker's 'Bookopolis', and George Booth's 'Dog Behind the Door'. It's a testament to the beauty of these magazine covers that I had a hard time deciding which cover image to feature here.
The New Yorker artwork is especially fitting on Amazon's Kindle, of course -- the magazine is known for featuring literary gems and intelligent articles (as well as brilliant cartoons and cover art). If you're a fan of the magazine, want a very artistic case for your Kindle, or just want to feel like you're reading a book while looking at a digital screen, this is a good choice.
Although the photos of the cases on the M-Edge website are compelling, in real life the jackets are even better looking and the fabric front cover very pleasing to the touch.
Cover art aside, though, the jacket in itself is finely crafted. Available exclusively from the M-Edge store and designed for the 3rd Generation Kindle, this cover fits the e-reader very well, with four leather corner straps (two of them expanding) to hold your Kindle in place. It's also a very lightweight jacket (important when you're leaning back to read for extended periods of time) and the cover folds back out of the way easily. Other pluses: the microfiber interior is gentle on your Kindle screen, and there's a slot for M-Edge's e-Luminator Touch booklight. You can tell a lot of thought went into the jacket design just from the color-coordinated stitching.
I had a hard time finding fault with this jacket. At $39.99 MSRP (at the time of this writing), it's not the cheapest case you can buy for the Kindle, but it is very satisfying to use if you like the artwork available, as I do. It would be nice if there were more than five designs available and there were versions for other e-readers/devices (2nd generation Kindle cover is no longer available), but those aren't really product flaws. One thing to note: the fabric front cover may be more susceptible to dirt or staining than other materials.
All in all, if you're a literary buff or magazine art afficionado--or are just looking for a lightweight, well-made cover for your Kindle--the M-Edge New Yorker aym be the most fitting choice.
