Nontoxic House Cleaners
- Containing acetic acid, white vinegar naturally cleans and deodorizes without using chemicals that will harm you and your family. You can remove tough odors from clothing by adding 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. To remove trapped odors in your carpet or upholstery, mist with undiluted white vinegar. As the vinegar dries, it will eliminate the odors. You can also remove hard water deposits and fungus -- such as mold and mildew -- by scrubbing the surface clean with undiluted white vinegar.
- Found in the laundry aisle, borax contains hydrated sodium borate and will keep your home naturally clean. Dissolve 1 cup of borax in 1 gallon of water. Dampen a sponge in the mixture and wash sinks, bathtubs, showers, walls and tiles with the mixture. After you have thoroughly cleaned the surface, rinse the borax mixture off with cool water and dry with several towels.
- Featuring a pungent odor, ammonia is a common ingredient in many household chemicals, including glass cleaners. To make a less toxic and inexpensive glass cleaner mix 1 cup of ammonia with 3 cups of cool water. Ammonia takes the work out of oven cleaning. Place a bowl filled with ammonia inside a cooled oven and let sit with the door shut overnight. The ammonia fumes will loosen the stuck-on food and grime. The next morning wipe the inside of the oven clean with a damp sponge.
- Baking soda has many uses in the home. From carpets to bathrooms, baking soda is an inexpensive and versatile weapon in your cleaning arsenal. Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1 gallon of water for an all-purpose cleaner. Placing an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator will eliminate unwanted odors in your fridge. Furthermore, you can keep your toilet bowls sparkling clean by scrubbing with 1 cup of baking soda and let sit for a few hours before flushing to rinse the bowl clean.
