How to Calculate RDW
- 1). Obtain a complete red blood cell count, including indices of the red blood cells in millions per microliter of blood, hemoglobin in grams per deciliter and the percent hematocrit.
- 2). Calculate the standard deviation of the RBC volume.
- 3). Calculate the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) by dividing the total hematocrit by the RBC and then multiply by 10.
- 4). Calculate the RDW by dividing the standard deviation of the RBC volume by the MCV and multiply by 100.
- 5). Normal RDW values range from 12 to 15 percent. If the RDW is outside of the normal range, seek the help of a certified medical professional.
