You can find Lab's in just about every walk of life, from the best friend of the family to being a valued member of the work force.
Originally bread as a water dog for bird hunters to retrieve any number of fowl from lakes, ponds and streams, the Lab has made a name for itself in many other walks of life, from rescuing people from fallen building to being a service dog for the handicapped.
The overwhelming need to please its owner makes a Labrador Retriever one of the easiest dogs to train in the world.
Coupled with their uncanny ability to sense and understand us, you can see why the Lab could be considered the smartest dog's on the planet.
There are some things you may want to consider if you are thinking of picking up a Lab for your family.
First off, Labs are considered to be a large breed weighing in at anywhere from 40-100lbs and are very athletic needing a great deal of excursive.
Being a very active dog, you will want to start training early because they can get board rather quickly leading to behavior problems like chewing on everything in sight.
Because of their size and energy level, you may want to keep the coffee table clear of anything you don't want to get broken or else you will see that happy tail sweeping it clean of anything in its way.
Although Labradors are considered to be a healthy breed over all, they can develop hip problems that can be very painful for the dog and extremely expensive to correct with surgery.
The average life span of Labs is 10 to 14 years, so plan on him or her being around for a long time.
As far as caring for a Lab, outside of exercise, grooming is fairly minimal.
The Lab does shed its coat 2 times a year, so if you have allergies this may not be the dog for you.
Don't give up just yet though, if you had yourself set on getting a lab but are worried about your allergies, look at getting a Labradoodle.
A Labradoodle is bred from a Poodle and a Labrador.
A Poodle is also considered to be very intelligent, athletic and has a coat that does not shed.
The properly bred Labradoodle will retain its coat from the Poodle, greatly reducing pet dander that causes allergy problems while keeping the lovable hard working traits of the Labrador.
Although the Labradoodle won't shed its coat, you will have to plan of a visit to the groomers about once a month for a haircut.
These are all important things to consider before choosing any breed of dog, or pet for that matter.
If I haven't made a distinct argument making the Labrador Retriever the smartest dog in the world, you can at least concede that the Labrador Retriever is the most versatile and well rounded dog breed there is.
