DMARDs

• Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) work by suppressing the immune system and slowing down it's attack on the body.
  
  

Risks

• Taking DMARDs can make you more susceptible to pneumonia and other respiratory illness. Treatment with antibiotics in the hospital may be needed.
  
  

Birth Defects

• Both men and women taking DMARDs need to consult with their doctors before planning a pregnancy. Serious birth defects are a possible side effect.
  
  

Steroids

• Prednisone is a steroid drug frequently prescribed for RA treatment. It does not slow the progression of the disease but reduces pain and swelling.
  
  

Alternative Medicine

• In addition to dietary changes, alternative treatments such as acupuncture, vitamins and herbs and hydrotherapy may be options.
