How Kids Can Create a Billboard

    • 1). Design the billboard advertisement. This can either be done by hand on a sheet of legal-size paper or, if you're proficient with design software, directly on the computer. Be sure to darken any outlines on the hand-drawn design with India ink or permanent marker.

    • 2). Scan the hand-drawn design onto your computer using a combination scanner and printer, if necessary. Print the design onto transparency paper. The resolution doesn't have to be high.

    • 3). Place the transparency of the design onto a projector and display the image on a large, blank wall. Be sure to position the projector precisely, as this will be the actual and final display size of the billboard ad.

    • 4). Butt sheets of paper together and tape them to the wall so that the design image is centered and falls entirely on the paper. For exterior applications, only use paper designed for billboards, otherwise, poster board or heavy-weight sheets of 11-by-17 inch paper works well.

    • 5). Trace the design onto the paper with pencil. Write matching, sequential numbers where paper edges butt against each other to make reassembly easier. Each seam should have a pair of matching numbers on either side of it. The first seam will have "1,1," the next will have "2,2" and so on.

    • 6). Lay down some drop cloths. Take down the paper and reassemble the design on top of the drop cloths. Paint the design. Remember to use exterior paint if displaying the billboard outdoors.

    • 7). Once the paint is dry, disassemble the design and transport it to the site for display. Reassemble the design on the ground. One by one, attach each piece to the billboard display by brushing glue onto the display surface, then, starting at the bottom of the sheet of paper and working up, attach the paper with a push broom. Use a waterproof glue for exterior applications, otherwise regular wood glue works well.
