How to Plant a Bamboo Fence
- 1). Use a shovel to dig a trench 30 to 36 inches deep.
- 2). Bury the polypropylene plastic sheet 30 inches deep on both sides of the trench. Add soil. Bamboo is notoriously invasive, due to its vast underground stem system, called rhizomes. When these rhizomes come up against a barrier they may turn and grow down, but they remain contained.
- 3). Plant the 5-gallon buckets of bamboo plants at the very top of your trench. Space bamboo plants every 4 feet to allow them room to grow horizontally. There are two kinds of bamboo. Running bamboo rapidly grows by spreading out long rhizomes. Clumping bamboo expands only a few inches each year and requires more room to grow a fence. Fill the hole and tightly pack down the soil.
- 4). Add soil amendments to the top 6 to 12 inches. Bamboos love moderate, acidic soil, so add amendments that balance the soil in your area. Bamboo is naturally a forest plant and excels under 2 inches or more of mulch. Instead of raking fallen bamboo leaves, let them remain under the plants to keep the soil soft and moisture retentive.
