How to Make Monsters Out of Shoeboxes

4
    • 1). Take the lid off of the shoebox and set to the side. Place the body of the shoebox upside down, with the opening on the table. Cover the outside of the shoebox in construction paper, gluing the pieces of paper in place with school glue. The bottom of the shoebox will be the monster's mouth. Place a sheet of pink, red or green construction paper on the bottom to represent the mouth. Trim away any excess and allow the glue to dry completely for about ten minutes.

    • 2). Turn the box right side up. Measure along the long side of the box using a ruler. Mark the center of each long side with a pencil. Cut along the center of each long side, being careful not to cut the bottom of the box. Fold the bottom of the box in half along the cut sides.

    • 3). Create features for the monster using more construction paper and markers or crayons. The two short ends of the shoebox should now be the top of the face and the bottom of the face, with the bottom of the shoebox representing the inside of the mouth. Create eyes, lips, eyebrows and designs on the monster's skin.

    • 4). Cut out two, 2- by 8-inch strips from the shoebox lid. Place a thin strip of glue along each short edge. Place each strip on the back, opposing sides of the shoebox monster, or what used to be the inside of the shoebox. Position the strips so that your hand can slide into the strip on the top and bottom of the monster's head to create a puppet. Allow the glue to dry completely before using the shoebox monster.
