Taking Charge of the Dominant Dog
Does your dog dominate you? Does he pull on his leash and drag you along with him? Does he barge in front of you when you are going through a door? Does he nudge and paw you when he wants attention? These are all examples of a dominant dog.
As far as your dog in concerned he is the alpha dog.
He is the leader of the pack, the position as owner that you need to place yourself in.
I have put here some tips that will help you to achieve dominance over your dog.
You must establish yourself as leader of the pack or your dog will continue the disruptive behavior.
Dominant dogs like to occupy significant parts of the house, such as the living room sofa or your nice comfy bed.
If your dog sleeps in your bedroom ban it from there immediately, including, if possible, the upstairs stairway if you have second floor bedrooms.
When your dog nudges you for attention ignore him.
Pack leaders ignore the demands of lower ranking pack members unless it suits them.
This is what keeps them as leaders.
When walking about your house make your dog get out of your way.
Do not walk around it.
Use your foot to nudge the dog gently out of the way.
If your dog is aggressive or may bite do not use this method.
Instead push something ahead of you such as a broom to clear a path.
Remove all toys, chews, and similar items.
Only use them when you choose to do so.
Stop petting your dog for no reason.
I mean completely.
All petting is now earned.
Don't let your dog go through a doorway ahead of you.
If you open a door and he tries to push his way ahead of you, slam the door in his face.
Make sure you don't hit him when you do this.
You may have to do this many times to get him to learn to wait and defer to you.
When preparing your dogs food or your own meals, make sure that you give your dog his food only after you have completed your meal.
Pack leaders eat first, lower ranking members eat last.
When your dog behaves in a manner that is undesirable you should ignore him.
Put him on a tether in another room if necessary.
Do not reward the dog with petting or talking to him, or with food.
Doing so just encourages him to continue with the bad behavior.
In order for you to be successful with your dogs training you, and everyone else in your household must be consistent.
A good training program would give you a lot more to work with than what I have put in this article.
