How to Operate a MGB Overdrive
- 1). Start the car. Drive it up to a speed where the overdrive unit can function. This will usually be a freeway or higher speed style of driving where you want lower RPMs and a higher speed.
- 2). Press the button for the overdrive when the car is in fourth gear and you wish to use the overdrive, which will lower the RPMs that the engine is at. Depending on the model of MGB and the type of overdrive it uses, the button will be on a steering column mounted switch or on the gear lever. Consult your owner's manual if you cannot determine where the switch is for your overdrive.
- 3). Deactivate the overdrive by pressing the button again if you wish to slow down. The gearbox should downshift to the next lower gear (fourth), and the RPMs of the engine will go up by a small amount. Continue downshifting to the next lower gears if you are coming to a stop. If you wish to use the overdrive again, activate it when you are back in the highest gear that overdrive functions in.
