Learn How to Snowboard

43
Once you have all your equipment and everything is where it should be, you're set to learn how to ride. This is going to be an experience of a lifetime and you're probably going to get frustrated a few times in the process of trying to get to where you want to be as a snowboarder. However, the reward of being able to fly down a mountain at an incredible speed is well worth the effort and just about any frustration you might go through.

When I'm teaching a very first timer I have them leave their back foot unstrapped for about the first hour or 2 depending on the speed of their progression. The first thing I have new riders do is lift their board off the ground with the one foot strapped in to help get used to having a board attached to their foot and feel the weight of the board. I have them spin in a circle in both directions to help with maneuvering because the easiest tasks can be very difficult when u have a 5ft board strapped to your foot. I don't spend but maybe 5 minutes doing this.

Next, I'd find a very small hill with a very delicate slope for your first decent down a hill and walk up it only about 20 yards. I'd strongly advise not taking a chair lift right away, even on the easiest run on the mountain because what I'm about to teach you is required in order to be able to get off the chair lift without
falling, or quite possibly hurting yourself.

As I mentioned earlier, the simple task of walking up the small hill might take you a while, I strongly suggest learning with a friend so you can laugh at each other because you're going to spend a lot of time on the ground. The bad news is, yes, you're going to fall a lot, and the better you get, the harder you're going to fall, but the good news is your first day on a snowboard should be your worst day on a snowboard ever, provided you don't break any bones during your snowboarding career.

One of the best ways to get up a hill with a snowboard strapped to one foot is to take a giant step with your unstrapped foot and pull the board up to the heel of your unstrapped foot and digging in your toe edge so your board doesn't slide out from underneath you. When you dig in your toe edge, you need to make sure its going straight across the hill and not even slightly down the hill, otherwise your board will still slide out from under you. Repeat the process and it will get you up the hill faster than about any other means, and once you get good at it, you'll even be able to run up the hill. Hope this helps in your ascent to the top.
