Coping With Sleep Related Problems

19
It is simpler to prevent children from developing sleep related problems rather than trying to treat them once they have already developed.
Most babies are able to sleep through the night once they reach four months provided they are taught good sleeping habits.
They need to learn that nighttime is the time to sleep, the crib is the place to sleep and that if they wake up they can go back to sleep on their own again.
You should also keep in mind however that every baby has its own sleep pattern.
Some babies have no problem sleeping while others struggle with sleep related problems for many years.
If you have a newborn baby, let them get accustomed to sleeping in a crib.
Place them in the crib while they are drowsy but still awake.
If your baby is crying rock them to sleep.
However, if you see your baby is just being fidgety and restless, do not pick it up from the crib.
Make sure your baby is wrapped up well as babies sleep better when they are swaddled tightly.
Initially a smaller crib works better than a large one as babies are more used to being curled up.
You don't need to go out of your way to make sure that the surroundings are completely quiet when your baby is asleep.
Most babies can sleep through normal noise levels.
All babies younger than three months should be cuddled whenever they cry.
They are too small to be able to communicate so crying is the only way they try to get across their needs.
Holding your baby assures them that you will look after them.
Your baby should ideally get sufficient sleep during the day.
However, do not let them sleep for longer than three hours at a stretch.
Awaken them gently and try to play with them.
Many newborns have their day-night cycle figured out backwards so exposing them to natural light as well as getting them to sleep at night for longer periods of time straightens out their sleep cycle.
While feeding your baby, make sure there is a gap of two hours between each feed.
This way they will not keep waking up at night to eat.
The last feed should be given at your bed time.
Try to soothe your baby down as much as possible just before putting them to sleep.
Turn down the lights, don't talk too much and reduce diaper changes so that your baby can settle down.
Place your baby's crib in another room so that you are not tempted to rush to your baby's side every time they fuss.
If your baby's crib is in the same room, place some sort of a screen so that the baby cannot see you when they awaken.
You should try to give your baby a chance to settle down on their own before intervening.
You should develop a regular routine for your baby.
Use the same blanket, same kind of lighting, and the same lullaby so that your baby knows that it is time to sleep.
