IT careers refer to professions in information technology. Usually, these positions include software engineers who create new technology and analysts who help companies successfully use the technology developed by the engineers. Green careers refer to those that help the environment in some way. According to U.S. News & World Report, there is overlap between each of these high-demand career fields. (See Reference 1.) The following list explores some of the opportunities available. - An environmental engineering technician combines office work with onsite projects and laboratory time. The demand for these professionals is growing due to an increasing number of environmental regulations. Environmental engineering technicians ensure that these regulations are met by assisting with the development of new devices aimed at insuring a company's environmental responsibility. Other requirements of this job include inspecting existing equipment used for green purposes such as recycling, conducting laboratory tests and surveying pollution. (See Resource 1.)
- Hydrologists use and develop technology to study all types of water. The focus of the studies are typically based on finding solutions to problems related to contaminated waterways, water supply and meeting new environmental regulations. As with careers in environmental engineering, the increase in government regulations on environmental policies should lead to the development of new positions for hydrologists. (See Resource 2.)
- Meteorologists use science and technology to study the Earth's atmosphere. Some related sciences include climatology and environmental meteorology. An environmental meteorologist specializes in the study of air quality, and climatologists focus on the science behind climate change. (See Resource 3.)
