Types of Carpentry Tools
- The first step in any carpentry project is to measure the pieces of wood so that they may be cut down to size; various tools can be used to measure the wood. A tape measure and a carpenter's square are the two most common tools that measure wood; the carpenter's square is used to measure, and ultimately to cut, even 90-degree angles. Chalking lines and squared carpenter pencils can also be used in measuring the wood for cutting.
- Cutting the wood pieces according to the measurements is the next step in a carpentry project. Numerous hand and power saws are meant for cutting wood. There are saws made for cutting circles in the center of pieces of wood, for cutting angles into the edges of slabs of wood and for cutting wavy edges.
- Various carpentry tools are used for securing wood pieces into place temporarily to make the wood easier to fasten together permanently. Wood glues, clamps, pliers and vices are examples of securing tools used in carpentry. Special wood adhesive tape may also temporarily secure pieces of wood together until they can be permanently fastened.
- Hammers, nails, screws, screwdriver, staples, staple guns, mallets and tacks are examples of carpentry tools that fasten pieces of wood together permanently. Both hand and power tools are available in this type of carpentry tool. Fastening tools not only permanently fasten pieces of wood together but also fasten other objects like handles and hinges to a piece of wood.
- Carving tools shape pieces of wood, either to draw designs into the surface of a piece of wood or to shape and smooth the wood. Sandpaper, files, chisels and electronic sanding drills are examples of some of the carving tools used in carpentry. Carving tools are any tools that alter the surface of the wood without cutting.
- Drills are an example of a multipurpose tool used in carpentry. Drills can be affixed with different drill bits that made the drill useful in different applications. Drills can cut holes through pieces of wood, remove or secure screws and carve into the surface of a piece of wood.
- Many carpentry tools, especially those used for cutting, should be used with caution to prevent injury to the persons using the tool.
