Pineapples are Berries

• One pineapple actually consists of numerous berries. These berries have fused to the central stalk. Like raspberries, pineapples are compound fruits, meaning that the fruit develops from multiple ovaries.
  
  

Pineapple Description

• Pineapples can be almost 1 foot tall. The prickly exterior results from the flowers of the plant. Each of the spines was a flower. The top of the pineapple, or crown, is actually the stem of the plant.
  
  

Plant Characteristics

• The pineapple plant is a perennial that grows low to the ground. Plants can grow between 2 1/2 and 5 feet in height, with a leaf span between 3 and 4 feet. Each plant produces one fruit at a time. A second fruit will not begin development until the first fruit has been harvested.
  
  

Growing Conditions

• Unlike most Bromeliads, which grow on other plants, pineapples grow in soil. They prefer the moist, mineral rich soil of tropical areas. Pineapple plants do not do well in extreme temperatures. Anything colder than 32 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter than 90 degrees Fahrenheit will negatively affect the plant.
