Certificate of Title

• The title of the vehicle is required in order to donate to charity. If the title of the vehicle can not be found, you must apply for a duplicate title at your nearby Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles office. In order for a donation center to accept the title to the vehicle, it must be signed in front of a registered notary and notarized with an official stamp and signature. If the vehicle has a lien on it, this has to be released before the vehicle is eligible for donation. A lien is not released until the vehicle is completely paid for.
  
  

Donation Form

• A donation form will need to be filled out from the charity of your choice and submitted. The donation form will require the make, model, mileage and general shape of the vehicle. Most charities will have the donation form available online, but if you do not have online access, call the donation center to have the form mailed to you. Most donation centers will even take vehicles that do not run and sell them for salvage value.
  
  

Tax Donation Slip

• Vehicle donations are tax deductible. Once the vehicle is sold, the money will be given to the charity of your choice. After the charity receives the money, it will issue a receipt that details the monetary amount received from the vehicle. When it is time to file taxes, your donation must be itemized on Schedule A of Form 1040. The deduction cannot exceed 50 percent of your adjusted gross income, and the charity must be a qualified organization.
