How to Darken Blond Hair Without it Turning a Funny Color

11
    • 1). Use dye and developer from the same manufacturer. So if using Clairol dye, use Clairol's developer. With blond hair, you can usually use a lower volume developer, such as 20 (as opposed to the stronger volume 40 developers which typically come with boxed dyes). Note: Higher volumes will remove more color from your hair, increasing your chances of darker hair getting exactly the test color. But higher volumes are also harsher on your hair. And since you are darkening not lightening your hair, you shouldn't have to use a higher volume.

    • 2). Mix the dye and the developer together into the dye bottle. Generally, this is in a 1 to 1 ratio. So for a 2-ounce bottle of dye, mix in 2-ounces of developer.

    • 3). Wear latex gloves while distributing the dye into your hair. Completely cover your scalp, getting down to all the roots and getting the hair thoroughly wet to the ends.

    • 4). Leave the dye on your hair according to instructions. Typically, this is about 30 to 40 minutes.

    • 5). Wash your hair and be sure to use a conditioner. Your color should be the darker color you selected and not something funny.
