Modification in the life style in diabetic patient is very essential in prevention, management and postponing complications due to diabetes.

Type of exercise:
Use the stairs instead of lift 10 minutes of stairs climbing is equal to 30 minutes of walking.
Intensity:
Increase the exercise intensity gradually and stop if there is any discomfort in chest, nausea or breathlessness.
Duration:
Stretching and warm up exercise for 10 minutes followed by 20 minutes regular exercise and increase gradually for 30 minutes or as advised by physician.
Timing:
Usually exercise in the morning, avoid late evening exercise.
Stress:
Aim of life style changes are:

- Eat healthy diet.
- Reduce stress.

- Physical activity burn up glycogen in body. To get rid of fat, you need to work out for at least 30 minutes every day, about 4 times a week.
- Exercise causes improvement in insulin action leading to better control of diabetes.
General exercise precautions:
- Encourage to stay safe and ensure that exercise is productive.
- Exercise programs carried out with precaution so that the person does not feel fatigue.
- Wear comfortable footwear during exercise andwash the feet with soap and water and dry thoroughly.
- Wear loose and comfortable cloths during exercise.
- People with high blood glucose and complications should not exercise unless advised by physician
- People with foot infections should avoid exercise.
- People with heart problems to avoid exercise unless advised by physician
- People with diabetic eye complications are advised to avoid heavy weight lifting as it can cause bleeding in eye.
- People with tingling and numbness should avoid weight bearing exercise such as running which can lead to foot ulcers and stress fractures.
Type of exercise:
- Walking – 1 km in 20minutesinitially and then gradually increase to 2 km in 20 minutes in week's time or continuous walking for 30 minutes.

- Cycling- Use bicycle for short distance instead of motorcycle.
- Jogging for 30 minutes

- People who cannot walk like in arthritis can do breathing exercise and yoga as advised by physician.
