Bangkok"s Patpong Night Market
The Patpong Night Market in Silom is as much a spectacle as a place to pick up souvenirs. The market spans the north side of Silom Road around Patpong Soi 2 and part of it connects through to Surawong Road. Vendors start stetting up at around 5 p.m. and the market is in full swing by about 8 p.m. The heart of the market is right next to the neighborhood’s bustling (and somewhat risqué) nightlife scene and the combination of partiers and shoppers makes for some interesting people watching.
Quick Strategies:
What to Buy:
Patpong’s Night Market is known for inexpensive souvenirs such as Thai boxing shorts, candles, tee shirts and pillow cases. There are also plenty of sellers offering knock-off bags, jewelry, watches and shoes.
Bargaining:
You must bargain at this market because vendors will often ask for three or four times the going price for something.
Facilities:
There are no bathrooms in the market, but if you arrive before 10 p.m., duck into the Central Department Store across the street.
How to Get There:
Take the Skytrain to Sala Daeng or the Subway to Silom.
Hours:
Stalls start to open at around 6 p.m.
and many stay open until the bars and clubs close at 1 a.m.
Quick Strategies:
- Know prices beforehand. Sellers drive hard bargains here and prices are often more expensive than at other markets. Keep looking. Nothing in this market is one of a kind, so if the seller doesn’t have the color or size you want, look elsewhere.
- Don’t drink and shop. Everything looks better after a couple of drinks but the Patpong Night Market isn't known for very high-quality goods.
