How To Avoid Chemicals In Tap Water

4
Because of the chemicals in tap water, many people have started drinking bottled. But, many city governments are encouraging their citizens to drink tap water, instead of buying bottled. If you don't know why, let me give you a brief overview of the subject.

Yes, there are chemicals in tap water and exposure to them is detrimental to your long-term health. But, chemical contaminants can be easily removed with affordable home filtration devices.

Unlike those city officials, I will not encourage anyone to drink tap water that has not been filtered at home, but I do believe that everyone needs to stop drinking so much bottled water. The affect that the bottling industry is having on our freshwater sources is huge.

You see. The industry wastes too much freshwater and our supplies are not unlimited. There have been record droughts around the world. In San Francisco, California, one of the cities that are encouraging residents to drink tap water, residents may have to ration their water usage this year, cutting back on showers and foregoing a green lawn.

The water resources in the area are at the lowest that has been seen since 1977. Cities and farms will get just about 15% of the amount that they request each year. Droughts are, of course the biggest cause, but bottling companies are partly to blame, as well.

They claim that agricultural demands require more than they do. But, agriculture is necessary. Bottled-water is NOT. Many companies don't even remove the chemicals in tap water, before they bottle it and sell it to you.

Companies like Coca-cola, which makes Dasani, and Pepsi, which makes Aquafina, use the local publicly treated supply in whatever town their facility is located. They run it through a reverse osmosis system, which has no affect on the chemicals in tap water. People buy it by the case, thinking that it is purer, safer or better tasting than what they can get at home.

The filtration methods that are available for homeowners are much more effective than what large-scale facilities can use. With granular carbon and other filtering media, they can remove nearly all traces of the common chemical contaminants, improve the taste, and balance the mineral content, as well as the pH level. There is nothing that you can find in a bottle that is better tasting or healthier, as long as you choose the right system.

If you drink tap water that has not been filtered, you are probably consuming chlorine and chlorination byproducts referred to as THMs. You may be drinking herbicides, pesticides, lead, cysts, industrial solvents and any number of cancer-causing compounds.

The average home purifiers remove only chlorine, but not the chlorination byproducts, which is simply illogical. So, look for a device that is certified to remove chlorine AND THMs. Then drink tap water, instead of bottled, and protect our freshwater supplies. We don't have to worry about the chemicals in tap water. We just need a good purifier.
