How to Rewire a Wall-Mounted Phone Jack in an Apartment
- 1). Remove the telephone cord from the socket on the telephone wall plate. Insert the tip of a flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver beneath the left side of the wall plate at its upper left corner. Slide the tip down the length of the wall plate to loosen the plate from the wall. Repeat this procedure on the right side of the wall plate.
- 2). Remove the screws on the top and bottom of the wall plate, or in the center only of the wall plate if the design merits this, using a Phillips screwdriver.
- 3). Pull the wall plate slowly off the wall a couple of inches so that the wires connected to the other side are not broken off.
- 4). Turn the wall plate over so that you can see the screws on the back. Loosen all of the screws using a Philips jeweler's screwdriver. Unwind any wires that are still attached to the screws with your fingers.
- 5). Strip a half inch of insulation off the ends of the red and green wires with wire strippers.
- 6). Wind the end of the red wire around the upper left screw on the back of the wall plate. Wind the end of the green wire around the upper right screw on the back of the wall plate. Screw down both screws.
- 7). Turn the wall plate over. Place the wall plate against the wall in the same position that it formerly occupied. Reattach the screws. Reinsert the telephone cord.
