How to Start an Asparagus Fern From a Sprig or Berry
- 1). Gather berries from existing asparagus fern plants. Expect the plants to flower late in the summer after it is a year old. The flowers are small, typically less than a 1/4 inch across, and white. The flowers mature into red berries roughly the size of a pea later in the fall.
- 2). Remove the seed from the berry just before planting. The seed will be tan.
- 3). Plant the seed about an inch deep. Asparagus ferns thrive in almost any soil conditions but prefer at least partial shade. The plants also work well in containers.
- 1). Remove the root of the asparagus fern from the soil. Look for the small offshoot roots near the main root.
- 2). Remove the offshoot root, sometimes called the basal shoot. According to the NOLA.com website, the root includes water storing tubers that help the plant through droughts. Leave these tubers attached to the roots if possible.
- 3). Keep the root wet by keeping them wrapped in wet paper towels or rags. Plant the root into potting soil as soon as additional growth becomes apparent.
