Day Bed Styles

Metal Day Beds

Day beds come in different styles and materials and can just as easily be found in metal as wood, or a combination of both. You can find upholstered day beds both in leather and fabric, wicker ones, and day beds that are embellished with other materials.

Metal is very popular and you can easily find different styles and colors in this material. There is a wide variety of choice in metal day beds from iron beds to lighter metal.

While white and black are popular color choices, it is easy to find metallic tones and other colors, too.

While traditional styles are popular in metal, you can also find contemporary styles. And even though metal is a popular choice for children's bedrooms, you can also find very versatile designs that can fit into many different types of rooms.

The Astoria Day Bed featured here is made from metal and has a pale amber metallic Champagne finish. It is modern and contemporary in style. It can be combined with an optional pop-up trundle which can be set next to the day bed to create an almost king sized bed. The trundle easily stores underneath when not in use.

Wrought Iron Day Beds

Wrought iron is another favorite material for day beds. Generally, you will find traditional and cottage styles in this material. These day beds may look good in guest rooms or sewing rooms.

The wrought iron day bed featured here has classic clean lines and comes with an antiqued black walnut finish that is protected with clear lacquer. It takes a twin-sized mattress, and comes with the option of a pop-up trundle bed.

Universal's Paula Deen Down Home Collection also features a wrought iron day bed.

Backless Day Beds

Most day beds have backs, and high backs at that, but it is possible to find backless daybeds also.

Featured here is a brown leather daybed from Hillsdale, with a backless design and stitched accents. Like many daybeds this one also has an optional upholstered trundle that pulls out for an additional twin-sized bed.

A backless day bed seems to take up even less space visually, and could be useful in a smaller room.

Mission Style Day Beds

The Mission style has stayed in favor it seems forever. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but it has had staying power. Maybe its staying power arises from the very simple, straight vertical lines that seem to be good at merging with other styles.

You will find plenty of day beds in the Mission style. Some will have wooden slats positioned closer together like this one, and some will have a more open look.

The open look is always better for a smaller room, because it makes the furniture seem less like a solid piece visually.

This day bed has a gently curved back and a dark espresso finish. It can be combined with a matching roll out trundle.

Upholstered Day Beds That Look Like Sofas

Upholstered daybeds, whether in leather or fabric, tend to look more like sofas. They are often treated as such, and they could primarily function more as seating, and only occasionally be used for sleeping.

Depending on the design, sometimes the trundle option is not there either. A good place for a day bed of this type could be in a living room or family room.

Lilly Pulitzer's day bed is functional and stylishly chic all at once.

It has a metal and wood composite frame with an antiqued gold finish and Polyester upholstery.

Victorian Day Beds

Victorian style day beds often offer stylized scroll work and ornamental details, and can be found in many different colors. They fit well into a traditional space.

Sleigh Day Beds

Sleigh daybeds can be found both in metal and wood, and that includes different wood tones as well as painted or rubbed finishes.

The sleigh daybed featured here is from the myHaven line from Stanley Young America. It is definitely more contemporary and modern in mood while still retaining its traditional profile.

This daybed is available in over 20 finishes, and Stanley's Young America line is made in the U.S.A.

Leather Day Beds

Day beds upholstered in leather give a finished look to a room. Leather can be used to upholster any kind of frame, be it a dramatic modern piece, a sleigh style bed as in the one featured here, or a more straight-lined simple contemporary piece.

The day bed is upholstered in dark brown leather over a solid hardwood construction. The sides and back panel are cushioned and it includes a built in pull-out trundle.

The mattress is supported on slats.

A leather day bed can also be used in place of a sofa, and can look more luxurious by virtue of its covering.

White day beds fit nicely into cottage themes, or in children's bedrooms where they provide a foil to other bright colors. Their popularity continues unabated.

This white day bed by Fashion Bed Group has solid wood construction in a white finish, and comes with an optional trundle, which can be used for another mattress or as a large storage unit.

A black day bed is just as ubiquitous as a white one. You can use one just about anywhere, from a child's bedroom as well as an office or a spare room.
