The Best Way to Put Up Shelves on a Wall
- 1). Run a stud finder along the wall until the device beeps or lights up, meaning a stud is behind the wall. Mark the location on the wall.
- 2). Measure up from the floor to find the correct height for your shelves. Determine whether you want the items at chest or eye level, or lower for children to access. Make a mark on the studs of the wall. Hold a spirit level up to the marks and make sure they are even. Adjust the marks as necessary.
- 3). Hold one of the vertical rods for the shelves, called a standard, against the wall on your mark. Mark the location of the top hole in the standard. Drill a 1/8-inch hole into the mark for the screw. Insert a 2 1/2-inch screw into the hole to hang the standard. Repeat this on the next stud over on the wall.
- 4). Insert a 2 1/2-inch screw into the bottom holes of the two standards.
- 5). Clip the shelf bracket into the standards and place the wood shelf onto the bracket. Insert a screw through the bracket into the bottom of the shelf to secure it. Do this for each shelf included in your kit.
