Science Projects for Blood Pressure & Caffeine
- Caffeine is an ingredient in drinks like soda and coffee, and is also found in chocolate. Many people consume caffeine on a daily basis. Science experiments that deal with caffeine consumption and blood pressure are relevant today because the effect that food and drink has on a person's health is at the forefront of much debate.
- A general experiment on blood pressure and caffeine is a one-time consumption experiment. In this experiment, students gather 20 people together and ask them to refrain from drinking caffeine on a set experiment day. They should not have caffeine for at least eight hours prior to when the experiment begins. The student takes the blood pressure reading of the 20 people, and then asks them to drink a cup of coffee. Then, the student takes a blood pressure measurement at five minutes after consumption, and every ten minutes after that for the next hour. Then, students should chart the differences in the blood pressure to see what changes consuming caffeine makes in blood pressure.
- Another caffeine experiment is a long term consumption experiment. Students should find 20 people to participate in the experiment--10 that drink caffeine on a regular basis, and 10 that do not drink caffeine at all. For one week, take the blood pressure of each of the 20 subjects in the morning and in the afternoon. See if there are differences in the blood pressure rates of the subjects that drink caffeine regularly, and those that do not.
- Other caffeine experiments deal with blood pressure as it ties to other effects. Students might need to use other pieces of research for this experiment. Find examples of 100 people's information, whether through a large study or through someone else who has already found out the information. Do a research experiment in which you look at the blood pressure rates of people who drink caffeine, compared to what a "normal" blood pressure rate for a person that age and health would be, and then see if there are other effects that go along with the blood pressure. Do you find that the majority of the people who drink caffeine that have high blood pressure also have diabetes? Or, do you find that most of the people who drink caffeine have lower blood pressure, and tend to work out more? Do an experiment based on the other medical facts that you have found.
