Montgomery County, Maryland, is just north of Washington, D.C., and home to a large, wealthy, well-educated population. Parents in this county are very proactive in providing high-quality summer activities for their children. There are several summer recreational camp programs from which parents can choose. - The Montgomery County Recreation Department offers a wide variety of camps for children and youth from ages 3 to 21. For preschool-age children, there are several half-day programs, including Summer Adventure Camps that include games and crafts centered on a different theme each session, music-themed camps, art-themed camps, space-themed camps and soccer camps. Imagination Camps offer a traditional mix of activities for early elementary-aged children, including arts and crafts, games, drama and swimming. There are several outdoor nature camps for 9- to 13-year-olds; many dance, music and performing arts camp options for 14- to 17-year-olds; sports camps and clinics for all ages and "on-the-go" camps that offer a different field trip every day. Most camp sessions are either one or two weeks.

There are traditional day camps that offer a variety of activities each day, including group sports and games, arts and crafts, music and swimming. More than 35 sports camps are offered, including aquatics, ballet/modern dance, beach volleyball, flag football and gymnastics. In addition to the myriad coed sports camps, girls-only camps are offered in basketball, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball. Arts-themed camps include jewelry making, theater/drama, drawing and fashion design. Several science-themed camps are available, such as robotics and "grossology." Other camp offerings include horseback riding and an outdoor adventure camp that enables campers to try hiking, caving, kayaking, rock climbing and canoeing. Camps last either one or two weeks.

ymcadc.org - Calleva Outdoor Adventures offers a range of high adventure outdoor camps for children age 6 to 15, as well as a leadership school for youths from 12 to 17. Younger campers age 6 to 9 may sign up for one-week Explorer Camps that enable them to try various outdoor activities. Sampler Camps are one-week camps that enable children to learn introductory skills in five activities such as caving, rock climbing and mountain biking. Activity Camps are one-week camps that enable kids to explore one activity in-depth for the duration of the camp. The following activities are available: Adventure Island, Art Inside Out (combining arts activities with an outdoor theme), rafting, kayaking, sailing, river ecology, fishing, mountain biking, building green, growing green, climbing, Duncan's Adventure (combines rafting, climbing and Adventure Island), horseback riding, whitewater canoeing and Camper vs. Wild (backpacking).
