Urinary Tract Infection

1
The urinary tract in the human body is made up of all those organs which play a role in the formation and expelling of urine from the human body namely the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Urinary Tract Infection is typically a form of germ infection which occurs in the urinary tract. Women are more prone to this form of infection which incidentally is the second most common type of infection in the world to affect the human body.

This infection may be caused by microbes such as fungi, viruses and bacteria which fester in the urinary tract. However most of the cases of Urinary Tract Infection are caused by the bacteria which enter the body through the urethra and then travel up the urinary tract causing the infection at various points.

Depending on the part of infected, Urinary Tract Infection may be further classified as:

Cystitis when the bladder is infected.

Pyelonephritis- when the kidneys are infected.

Urethritis when the urethra is infected.

The presence of Urinary Tract Infection is characterised by the following symptoms:

Experience a painful or burning sensation while urinating.

Experiencing fever, nausea and vomiting.

Frequent urination.

The passing of cloudy or heavy urine.

The diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection is done through a urine culture. The treatment procedure for this condition is also fairly simple in the sense that it involves following a course of anti-biotics with the objective of providing relief from the symptoms and eliminating the infection. Doctors would also advise the patients to drink a lot of water and to go to the bathroom and empty the bladder as often as the need is felt instead of trying to hold back.

Expectant mothers should be cautious and should not neglect the symptoms as this type of infection can prove to be harmful for the health of the mother and the baby as well. A doctor should be consulted immediately. The same principle also applies for people who have diabetes.

The prevention of Urinary Tract Infection is possible by taking the following pre-cautions:

1.The intake of liquids especially cranberry juice in ample conditions and frequently during the day as this helps to flush out the bacteria from the body.

2.Maintaining high standards of personal hygiene and physical cleanliness.
