The Oak as a Shade Tree
- The majestic height and expanse of the oak tree species Quercus has contributed to its renown as a source of shade. Because of its distinctive leaf and growth forms, homes and buildings planted under or near an oak tree benefit from the shade of the tree in hot summer months, drastically cutting cooling costs.
- Oak trees mature quickly, usually within a span of 5 to 10 years, offering their properties of shade more rapidly than many other landscape trees. This is a particularly valuable asset in new housing or office developments where many trees are planted as seedlings.
- Some oaks maintain their leaves through the winter. They minimize cold wind gusts that buffet a building, providing a savings benefit in heating costs, in addition to the savings derived from the cooling shade an oak offers buildings during the sweltering dog days of summer.
