How to Block Long-Distance Phone Numbers
- 1). Subscribe to a dial lock phone service with your telephone service provider that enables you to block unwanted long-distance phone numbers from being dialed. Call your telephone service provider to inquire about this feature by dialing the customer service telephone number listed at the top of your most recent phone bill. You pay a monthly fee to block long-distance phone numbers from being dialed, and your telephone service provider gives you a code to dial on your phone to manage your dial lock feature.
- 2). Pick up your phone, listen for a dial tone and dial the code provided by your telephone service provider to access the call lock feature on your phone service.
- 3). Listen to the prompts to set up the service. Block all long-distance phone numbers from being dialed on your phone by pressing the corresponding numbers as read to you by the voice on the dial lock service. Block specific long-distance phone numbers from being dialed from your phone service by pressing a different corresponding set of numbers as dictated by the voice. The exact prompts to enter vary by service provider. For an explanation of exactly which buttons to press on your phone, ask a customer service representative with your phone company. When someone tries to make a long distance call that you've blocked, he will hear a message like, "We're sorry. You are not allowed to dial that number from this telephone."
- 4). Set up the dial lock feature on your phone to create a secret code that allows you and other authorized users to bypass the dial lock feature on your phone and make long distance phone calls. Continue listening to the prompts on the dial lock phone service feature and press the corresponding numbers that allow you to set up a secret code number. You may select your own number by pressing the numbers you choose at the voice prompt. When you have a secret bypass code set up, you will be able to pick up your phone, listen for a dial tone, enter the secret bypass code, hear a series of fast beeps followed by another dial tone, then dial your long distance number. Only give this secret code to people you trust with long distance phone calls on your telephone.
- 5). Hang up your phone to finish setting up the call lock feature.
