    Installing the Stereo Wiring

    • 1). Remove your car's stereo from its mounting in the car's dash. The removal of your stereo can vary greatly depending on the type of stereo or car you have. However, typically aftermarket stereos slide out with a set of tools usually sold with the stereo, and stock stereos usually require you to remove part of the dashboard first in order to access the stereo's mounting.

Find the wires designated for the speakers in your stereo's wiring using your stereo-specific wiring diagram. Speaker wires can vary, although they are typically identified in solid and striped pairs (for example, one blue wire and one blue wire with a white stripe might indicate the left front speaker). Typically, the striped wire of each pair indicates the negative terminal, and the solid wire indicates the positive terminal.

    • 3). Run a length of wire from the stereo to the location where the speaker will be housed. Speaker wiring is designed in pairs, with one wire typically striped, and the other typically solid or clear. Attach the striped side of the speaker wiring to the striped terminal on your stereo's speaker wiring, and attach the solid side of the speaker wiring to the solid terminal of your stereo's speaker wiring. Repeat this step for each speaker you are installing.

    Installing the Speakers

    • 1). Tuck away any loose speaker wire underneath the floor mats and door panels of your car to avoid any tripping. Each car's cabin will require you to go about hiding these wires differently, so you may need to get creative in order to make the wiring of your speaker system look clean and neat.

Door paneling and speaker covers vary with each car's make and modelcar door image by Albert Lozano from Fotolia.com

Remove any aesthetic speaker covering or door paneling that may be hiding your speaker housing from view. Depending on the make and model of your car, removing these coverings may vary, so you may need to consult your car's manual in order to figure out how to remove them. However, typically, speaker covers are held in place by screws that can be removed fairly easily with a screwdriver, and door paneling usually can be removed with a flathead screwdriver or pry bar. Repeat this step for each location where you plan on installing a speaker.

    • 3). Locate the speaker wires and attach them to the speaker which you are installing. The negative, striped wire should connect to the negative terminal of the speaker, typically indicated by a larger sized tab, and the positive, solid wire should connect to the positive terminal of the speaker, typically indicated by a smaller sized tab. Be sure to match the polarities of the speaker and the speaker wire correctly, or else your speaker's sound quality could diminish greatly. Repeat this step for each speaker.

    • 4). Screw the speaker into its place on the door or wall panel which it is being housed in using your screwdriver and one inch screws. Typically, door and wall paneling speaker ports are designed with grommets that you can use to drill these screws into. However, it may be necessary to adjust the speaker slightly in order to make the holes line up with the grommets on your speaker. Once the speakers are securely in place, replace the door paneling and/or speaker covering to its original place, making sure no wires are pinched between the wall or door and the paneling. Repeat this step for each speaker.
