DIY Fiberglass Motorcycle Seat
- Ensure that the seat will fit your bike by creating a template right on the seat area. Measure and sculpt a template from foam on top of the bike using a sculpting knife or grinder. Tape off the rest of the bike and cover it with sturdy plastic or a tarp to prevent damage. Once the foam is sculpted, you can begin to create the seat top.
- Apply wax or mold release compound to the entire piece of foam. Coat it evenly and thoroughly. Releasing the mold is one of the most difficult steps. Once coated, begin to cut and layer your fiberglass strips right over the foam. When the mold piece is covered in strips, mix up your fiberglass resin and hardener in a large bowl and paint it on the foam. Cover the entire area with a generous amount of fiberglass. Let it dry.
- Start at one corner and twist the mold until the center section pops off the foam. If you used enough mold release compound, the seat will pop right off. If not, gently tap the seat off the form with a rubber hammer. Refit the seat to the motorcycle.
- Carefully measure and mark the underside of the seat using a marker to indicate where the hardware should be located. Drill mounting for it and install the hardware in the seat. The seat can now be upholstered. Lay batting or foam over the top, and then stretch leather or fabric like nylon over it. Pull the fabric snug but not tight around the foam. Staple it to the bottom of the seat pan.
