Homemade Outerspace Hats
- Use large paper bags that fit over your head to make outer space hats. On the four corners, cut down 6 to 8 inches from the top opening of the bag. Depending upon the size of the paper bag and the person wearing the hat, you might need to make deeper cuts. This allows the bag to fit over the shoulders of the wearer. Choose a side for the face and cut a large oval shape. Glue ribbon around the hole to keep the paper from tearing. Decorate the outer space hat with crayons, markers and assorted buttons.
- Tear off a piece of aluminum foil long enough to fit around the head of the wearer, plus 4 inches. Lay the piece flat. From what will be the bottom edge, mark 2 inches and fold up twice to create a sturdy band. Place around the head, overlap the edges and staple them together. Fold the upper part of the aluminum foil together to create the over-the-head hat portion of the one-of-kind outer space hat.
- This outer space hat takes at least five or six paper plates. Cut out the inner circle of a paper plate leaving a 2-inch frame. This part fits over the front of the face. To each side of this face plate, staple another paper plate. These plates fit over the sides of the head. Depending upon the head size of the wearer, you'll need to add one or two more plates so the hat fits around the head. Using silver duct tape, tape the last plate over the top of the circle of plates. Spray paint the hat silver, black or green. Decorate with glitter to finish.
- Make an outer space hat from a cereal box. Cut the back from a cereal box, leaving the other sides intact. On the front, cut out a square or oval shape for the face. Cover the box with silver, black or green contact or construction paper. Add details with markers or colored foam cut outs. Tape straws to the box sides for antennas. On each side, punch holes and tie a thin piece of elastic from one side to another. This will enable the cereal box outer space hat to fit over the head.
- Start with a plastic bucket. Using a sharp knife, cut an oval hole for the face. Cut this oval piece in half through the longer side. Glue to the outside sides of the bucket. Glue foam padding on the inside of the bucket. Spay paint the bucket green, black, silver or what works with the concept of an outer space costume. Decorate with glitter pens, buttons, and markers.
- Make paper mache with a mix of one part flour to two parts water. Mix to a dough consistency, adding more water or flour if required. Rip newspaper into narrow strips. Blow up a balloon to a little larger than the size of the head that will wear the hat. Dip paper strips into the paper mache and place around the balloon until it is covered. Let dry before adding another layer or two. Once it is totally dry, pop the balloon and remove. Cut out side to fit over the face, spray paint and wear a paper mache outer space hat.
