11
Hemorrhoid banding is a procedure done for people who suffer from hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids is a chronic condition where the veins in the anus become swollen and later on, bleed.
The bleeding and the swelling causes pain, discomfort and even embarrassment.
If you're someone suffering from hemorrhoids, should you consider haemorrhoid banding as a cure? How Hemorrhoid Banding is Done As the name suggests, this procedure is done by "banding" or placing a band around the base of the hemorrhoid.
An instrument called anoscope is used to perform the banding.
Through haemorrhoid banding, the blood supply will be stopped up until the area where the band has been placed.
This will cause the swelling to shrink and after one to two weeks, the haemorrhoid along with the banding will fall off.
The procedure can be performed for more than one hemorrhoid or swelling.
The length of time to complete this procedure will depend on the number or hemorrhoids that need to be banded.
The patient can feel a slight discomfort or pain while undergoing this procedure and even afterwards.
In most cases, the doctor will prescribe medication to relieve the pain and discomfort.
If a number of hemorrhoids need to be banded, general anesthesia can be recommended.
What are the possible complications of this procedure? For one, there is a risk of excessive bleeding in some patients.
Others may find it painful or difficult to urinate after the banding has been done.
There is also the risk of allergic reaction caused by the anesthetic used to relieve the pain.
Other side effects can be swelling of the anus and difficulty in bowel movements.
Nevertheless, after 1 to 2 weeks, when the hemorrhoids fall off, healing can begin.
During the healing period, the patient who has undergone hemorrhoids banding must be very careful as even the slightest strain can cause the condition to return.
Eating fiber-rich foods and drinking plenty of liquids are a must to avoid constipation.
The doctor may also prescribe an ointment that can be applied to the affected area to speed up the healing process.
Through hemorrhoid banding, permanent relief from this chronic condition can be achieved.
However, this is a serious procedure that must only be done by a licensed medical expert.
In some cases, despite the banding, the hemorrhoids may persist and this is when surgery is often recommended.
