How to Save Power With a Hot Tub
- 1). Turn the hot tub down two or three degrees. Doing so won't make very much of a noticeable difference in temperature, but the money it would take to heat the spa that extra few degrees is more significant than it would seem. Test it out and play with the temperature; you may find you are able to lower it even further and still be completely comfortable. Remember, the lower the temperature, the lower the monthly power bill.
- 2). Turn the lights off. Doing so will also save on energy as it may require less energy to run external lights. Also consider turning off the air jets. The air they produce actually cools the water temperature some. By turning off the jets, you save power that goes into operating the jets, along with extra heating costs.
- 3). Turn the hot tub off completely in the off season or when you plan on going on a vacation. If you live in a climate that doesn't support year-round hot tub use, there is absolutely no need to have it on and wasting power while you know you won't be using it. Similarly, turning it off when you go on vacation will also keep your hot tub from running up your power bill while nobody is there to use it.
- 4). Maintain your spa. Keeping up with regular maintenance such as water-cleaning and filter-changing can also help greatly reduce the hot tub's power usage.
- 5). Create or make some sort of windbreak. Whether it be plants, a fence or even a simple tarp, keeping wind from blowing on the water will also help maintain the desired temperature.
