HUD Grant for Overdue Mortgage Payment Before Foreclosure
- You have to be at least four months behind, but not more than 12 months behind on your mortgage payments to qualify for a partial claim. You still qualify for a partial claim if you are more than 12 months behind, but you have to pay the amount that exceeds the 12 month limit before applying for a partial claim.
- The home must be your primary residence and you must be able to resume regular mortgage payments after HUD pays the past due amounts. You must attempt to repay the past due amounts through a loan modification or forbearance program with your lender before applying for a partial claim.
- You will have to sign a promissory note stating you will pay back the amount of the partial claim after you pay off your mortgage or no longer own your home. Under either of those conditions, the partial claim amount is due in full. You may make prepayments on your partial claim at any time, without penalty.
