How to Landscape Around a Wishing Well
- 1). Prepare the soil around the wishing well before planting inground plants. Remove all grass and sod with your spade. Till deeply, at least 6 inches, to loosen soil that may be compacted beneath the surface.
- 2). Mix 2 gallons of garden soil with one-half gallon of compost or well-rotted manure in a wheelbarrow or garden cart. Add a shovelful of the mixture to each planting hole you prepare for inground plants. Moisten the soil and allow it to drain well before you plant.
- 3). Plant climbers, such as ivies, roses, sweet peas or nasturtium, at the corners of your wishing well. Secure their branches or trailing stems to the well with twine to encourage vertical growth.
- 4). Plant taller flowers, such as hollyhocks, foxgloves or day lilies, in front of the well panels. Add up to 6 inches of mulch to each completed planting to discourage weeds and retain moisture.
- 5). Choose colorful shade-loving annuals, such as impatiens, to fill out the spaces between plantings. This will provide some early-season instant color for your wishing well while your perennial plantings are waiting to bloom.
