How to Become an Amsterdam Copywriter

26
UK copywriters have had it tough in recent times. Until around 2008, the garden was lovely. Then came the credit crunch and an army of weeds.

If you don't fancy some strenuous weeding, you might want to take a good look at ditching Plan A. Let's face it, Plan B is urgently required.

Plan A was a doddle. All you had to do was get yourself a website and optimise it to the gills with general copywriting terms. Not on page one of the organic listings? Not to worry €" there's always Google Adwords. However, today, those generic Google searches and Adwords clicks just aren't working for UK copywriters.

Who's clicking those expensive Adwords ads? Just generic marketing people who've lost their jobs and need advice on starting out as a freelance copywriter. That, or sharks needing wordfarm content at $2 a page.

Tell them where to go. It doesn't help copywriters, though, that businesses have dismissed copywriting and marketing as not being the way out of their troubles. What are they aiming to do - 'save' their way out of the recession?

And those wordfarms. The phenomenon known as web content has just about finished UK copywriters off. SEO content has turned a practised art into a packaged commodity. The men from Mumbai are now hacking away at the legs of UK copywriters, with every business suddenly thinking that quality copywriting costs under 10 a page.

So, where's the cavalry? The way out for UK copywriters is to find new copywriting markets. They can be anywhere. In the Internet age, you can find them with just a few clicks of your mouse. You can even choose way-out locations like Australia and New Zealand. So, let's imagine you want to find work as a copywriter in Amsterdam, for example.

It's simple. There are two obvious routes. One will cost a few coins. The other is effectively free.

For a few pence, you can alter your Adwords account to accept searches for 'copywriting Amsterdam' or 'Amsterdam copywriter'. The nifty thing here is that geography is unlimited. You can target anywhere you fancy €" Zurich? Milan?

But if you have little to spend, don't worry. You can simply pen a landing page that positions you as a freelance copywriter in Amsterdam. Just get those copywriting words next to Amsterdam words and wait for the phone line from Holland to run hot. Don't forget to add a few backlinks on articles sites with good anchor text.

Here's a copywriter who's doing that. He's based in the UK, but has positioned himself as a copywriter in Amsterdam.

Everyone wins, this way. UK copywriters get more work in new markets, and Amsterdam businesses take on the best copywriter for the job, not just the closest.
