How to Add Hair to a Pottery Sculpture
- 1). Place your pottery sculpture into the kiln and fire it for the required length of time.
- 2). Don heat-resistant gloves.
- 3). Open the door of the kiln. Grip the handles of the pottery tongs and use them to carefully grip the edges of your sculpture. Place the sculpture on the pottery wheel.
- 4). Gather the strands of hair you want to apply.
- 5). Grasp a hair between your thumbs and first fingers. Drape it across the sculpture, being careful not to touch the surface with your fingers. The hair will burn and leave a black line or patch. Experiment with applying the hair from different angles or draw the hair upward or downward against the sculpture to create a unique carbon design.
- 6). Work quickly, as you will only have about 30 to 45 seconds before the sculpture starts to cool. Once the temperature of the piece drops below 900 degrees Fahrenheit, the hair will no longer adhere to it.
