Are Funky Baby Clothes Cool for the Baby?

5
As parents, many of us are attracted to buy funky baby clothes.
Perhaps because we would love to wear funky clothes ourselves and sometimes our corporate lifestyle prevents us.
But what about the impact of these ultra cool baby clothes on babies? Are they good or damaging? In my humble opinion, there's a very significant difference we must appreciate about our evolution...
from the stages of toddlers to kids to teens to adults.
And if we are able to perceive ourselves with the mind of the relevant age group, we will be making the wisest choices.
Let's start with adults - what we are.
We are people of free will who can evaluate contexts, budgets, make value judgments and generally assess for ourselves what would be befitting in what circumstances.
We wear black (or white, based on our faith) at funerals, colors on birthday parties and funky clothes when we hang out.
Teenagers too do the same, but they are dependent on adults for cash and therefore may have certain unaired desires which manifest in adulthood...
As for kids, this is the age that truly manipulates the parent.
They know what they want - wrongly or rightly - from television and their pester-power is phenomenal, to say the least.
Usually they get away with funky clothes also because they look cute in them and it is what their peer group is wearing anyway.
But coming to toddlers, they are like dolls for their parents.
I have seen many that wear funky baby clothes, some of which proclaim they are the 'kids of the devil'.
Why? Because dad wanted to be the 'devil' when he was a teenager and was not allowed to vent it out.
Now he dresses his doll to reflect him.
Prima facie, no problem in that.
The problem arises when others look at this so called funky baby romper and comment, 'ah, son of the devil are you?' And even though they just leave it at that, when the baby grows up and comes to understand what the word devil means, complexities start developing in his mind.
We all know (I presume) that the most influential years of human development are between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.
80% of mental development is complete by the age of 6.
So a 'son of the devil' imprint is one we as parents generously leave on our kids little realizing the impact that may have on their self-image and self-esteem in years to come.
That said, I would encourage parents to look and feel younger by adorning the funky dresses on themselves and let cool baby clothes be funky in the cheerful, not obnoxious, sense.
